Why Attend a City and Guilds TAQA Course?

The purpose of this City and Guilds TAQA scheme is to train assessors and those carrying out quality assurance to attain current assessment and quality assurance standards together with the competence as necessary to deliver these functions. These are qualifications that will equip a wide range of assessors,trainers, facilitators and teachers to support learners.

City and Guilds TAQA is a modular award (Levels 3 and 4) and replaces the C&G A1/A2 and V1/V2 Units. C&G TAQA inducts candidates into the TAQA Qualification scheme. The Modules and Awards will provide people who carry out assessment and internal quality assurance roles in their organisation with the opportunity to develop and improve their practice as well as achieving a professional qualification for the role. The TAQA Awards have been developed for those working in accredited learning, non -accredited learning, the NQF and the QCF.

The TAQA qualifications consist of a mix of modules – some are competence-based and some knowledge based. The knowledge only module (Unit 301 ‘Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment’) allows anyone who is interested in or needs to know about assessment and quality assurance, but is not a practitioner, to acquire knowledge and information about the roles. The modules which are practice based require the candidate to complete the learning outcomes as listed in the documentation for individual modules.

C&G TAQA is Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) accredited. Level 3 Assessor and Level 4 Quality Assurance qualifications are based on the modules developed by LLUK who are the Sector Skills Council for Lifelong Learning.

A City and Guilds TAQA Award is suitable for those who work, or want to work, as:

  • Assessors/Teachers/Trainers/Tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector and Adult/Community Education
  • Assessors/Trainers of personnel in commerce, industry, public and voluntary sectors or HM Forces
  • Quality Assurance/Internal Verifiers and Support Staff in Further and Adult Education Quality
  • Assurance Managers and Internal Verifiers in Workplace Training and further and adult education provided they are qualified in the subject they intend to assess by virtue of holding an appropriate professional qualification or employed in a training/teaching role. The decision as to what constitutes an appropriate qualification is at the discretion of the training provider or employer.

What’s involved in studying the TAQA/CAVA course?

You will cover all the essential C&G TAQA/CAVA course principles and practices of training assessment and quality assurance, including assessing competence and achievement.

You will learn in the work environment and/or the TAQA/CAVA training environment, as required.

TAQA/CAVA Assessment methods include observation,witness testimony, interview and discussion, oral and written questions,assignments, projects and case studies.

TAQA/CAVA Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (Unit 301)

A knowledge-only Award for those who are starting their journey as a TAQA/CAVA assessor, or those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising.

TAQA/CAVA Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (Unit 302)
For TAQA/CAVA practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation/examining work products/oral questioning and discussion/use of witnesses/learner statements/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

TAQA/CAVA Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (Unit 303)
For TAQA/CAVA practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally related subject areas using the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments/skills tests/oral and written questions/assignments/projects/case studies/RPL.

TAQA/CAVA Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
For TAQA/CAVA practitioners who may use ALL of the above-listed assessment methods based upon sound assessment principles.  Required for anyyone wanting to be a Full TAQA/CAVA Assessor in their training environment whether workplace or classroom based.

About Level 3 TAQA/CAVA Awards
The Level 3 provides a pathway for learners to understand assessment and if required, qualify as an assessor. Learners who wish to achieve these units could be assessing competence or non-competence based learning, knowledge or skills. They will select the units and qualifications that meet the requirements of what they are assessing.

There are three TAQA/CAVA Awards and a Certificate available at Level 3:
The TAQA/CAVA Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment is a knowledge-only award for those who are starting their journey as an assessor, or those who need to know about assessment practice but are not currently practising.
